I make my living as an artisan that only needs a small space so that is the main consideration in my design. The design is ready and construction begins next month. I am also in Seattle. I have a few general questions for someone who is living in this manner particularly in the Seattle area. If you don't mind a quick chat perhaps we can catch up via email and I can show you my design and the type of work that I do.
Hope to hear from you,
RobertAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6286605391588730546.post-2271350189604859652012-09-25T08:06:32.421-07:002012-09-25T08:06:32.421-07:00Hi Cubist! When space becomes impossible, then it forces a person to look around at their stuff and re-evaluate its place and value in their life. I think each person should have a space to work and shared space to sleep and eat. But that's just me. Take a look at this picture:

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/9O8b0ZIlRhi1aMdTkCogJtMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink

From the top you can see there is a gap between the insulation and the outer sheathing. At the top there is also a small gap between the top of the sheathing and the ridge board. Here is another pic that shows this:

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/YRagIr0kHttLw-Y1kJg8BdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink

Now the tar paper does go over the roof line but there is still a gap at the end and the metal roof allows some air to get in/out under that.

So, from the inside out we have:
1/4 inch wood paneling
0.6 mm plastic vapor barrier
2x4 studs with 2 inch foam and an air gap
Sheathing
Tar paper
metal roof

with some strategic air gaps.

Now, not having done this before I have no way of knowing how well my gaps are working and I really don't intend to take the roof off to check. I can say we have no leaks and no smells and that makes me happy. :-)Jeff Hemsleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10816936399341775250noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6286605391588730546.post-21907155206667985192012-01-22T20:54:00.231-08:002012-01-22T20:54:00.231-08:00Hi Jeff and Arlene,

The builder we bought our plans from and many other tiny home builders do not vent their ridges/roofs, and use something other than closed cell foam insulation on their cathedral ceilings, which is advised against in every bit of building science we can get our hands on because of the condensation moving from the inside out in the winter and causing eventual rot/mold on the insulation and/or sheathing. We see you used rigid foam insulation, but how did you decide not to vent your roof? Thank you!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6286605391588730546.post-10052393405672299392011-07-04T13:44:17.085-07:002011-07-04T13:44:17.085-07:00I hope that you can post some updates again soon. ...I hope that you can post some updates again soon.
